How To Paint Aluminum Siding
Its easy to paint over aluminum siding. The best results are achieved by a professional painter or at least someone with some practice and a paint sprayer. For more information about tip sizing please read Choosing The Correct Spray Tip Size.
Is it Aluminum Siding or Galvanized Siding?
You can use the same paint system for painting over aluminum siding as you would for painting over galvanized steel. Some will tell you to paint aluminum with oil based primer and galvanized steel with only acrylic primer. The truth is that for both the best procedure is to use a high-grade 100% acrylic exterior bonding primer. This will work on both an aluminum siding or a galvanized steel siding. The reason for the discrepancy is that old school latex paint cannot be used on galvanized steel so people would use oil and usually get paint saponification to some degree. Now most oils are expensive if even legal in most states. The paint manufactures have responded with waterborne paint that is far superior and can be used on most surfaces but you should always check with the manufacturer first.
Power washing is the best first step in any paint job, especially with metal siding. You will have to get almost all of the oxidation off the finish or off the metal. Use a strong mixture of TSP with a bit of bleach. If enough is not removed you can expect little blisters to form when the paint system reacts with the oxidation. TSP and bleach will remove oxidation well however this leaves a problem of high PH. Anytime the PH is too high you will also get reactions so an acid bath with more than sufficient dry time is helpful after the cleaning process.
Second Step To Painting Your Siding
Using a high quality acrylic primer over your galvanized metal will ensure less problems and higher adhesion. Primer should always be used when painting any metal siding.
Next You apply The Finish Coat On Your Siding
When painting aluminum siding there might be dents caused by hail or someone with a ladder that didn’t take extra care. These small imperfections can be hidden quite a bit with a light-colored flat exterior paint. When using flat paint on an exterior surface that you’ll want to last will need a top line paint. Use two coats with this as you don’t want to do it again.
Application Methods Of Painting Aluminum Siding
Spraying the paint on metal surfaces will always get the best results. However you can paint aluminum siding with a brush and roller. It is best to use a small bucket with a small roller and a small roller screen in the bucket. Use the brush and the roller in the same area as you work across the siding. This will decrease moving ladders around the house thus saving time. If you choose the brush and roll method, be sure to use quality paint so it levels out nicely.
