How To Dispose Of Paint – The Cheapest Way & The Greenest Way
Disposing of paint is actually very simple! You may want to dispose of the paint in the greenest fashion possible OR dispose of the paint in the cheapest way possible. GOOD NEWS! I have combined these so everybody can be BOTH cheap and green! First and foremost you must determine what type of paint it is.
1. Determine if it is oil based paint or water based paint. You can usually do this just by the smell. If the smell test alludes you, try the feel test. Oil based paint feels much more oily and sticky. If you are still confused dab a very small amount somewhere and see if you can get a few droplets of water to mix with it. If by chance you are still confused…
- If its OIL – Take the paint to the nearest household hazardous waste facility or program. Sometimes these facilities are nicknamed “Tox Dump” or “Tox Disposal”. Never try to dispose of oil based paints any other way.
2. If it is WATER BASED PAINT. You are in luck. Water based paint can also usually be taken to the tox dump or other program. However the easier way is to Solidify The Paint! There are many products to do this sold at many paint stores and big box stores in small packets. They are usually 3-5 dollars which works but is not cost effective when you have 5-20 gallons of paint! For disposing of a large amount of paint you can buy in bulk. Bulk Paint Solidifier. This is enough product to harden 40 gallons of paint at $1.50 per gallon. After paint is hardened the paint can be thrown in ANY landfill or ANY trashcan.
3. Lastly – But IMPORTANT. While you are saving the environment. Remember to recycle the metal or plastic can that it came in. We at Grants Painting strive to be as green as we can! Please do the same in your disposal of old paint.
Using Kitty Litter To Solidify Paint
Kitty litter is will solidify paint. However we are not sure how green this option is because the kitty litter will hold onto the solvents in the paint. Painters in Indianapolis can use this method because the city of Indianapolis approves of this practice and even suggests it.
